How to Use Pinterest Trends To Grow Your Pinterest Traffic

Ciao Bella! 👋

In this blog post, I will be discussing using Pinterest Trends as part of your content marketing strategy. Pinterest Trends places a large emphasis on Pinterest keywords and Pinterest keywords. If this is something new to you, feel free to check out my blog post on 4 Simple Pinterest Strategies to Quickly Grow Your Website's Traffic, in which I go over Pinterest keyword optimization.

But now, back to Pinterest Trends…

Pinterest Trends

Pinterest will soon be phasing out the Pinterest guided search, and although this may seem like negative news for those of us doing Pinterest keyword research, it may not be all that bad!

Pinterest has been vamping up its Pinterest trends feature! This tool gives public information on top search terms within the past 12 months and information on when top terms peak. It also shows trending search terms for various topics, just like how Google will suggest specific search keywords. So now we don’t just have to go along with other keyword suggestions - but also evaluate which keywords perform better (and when they’re searched for most often in the year!).

You will find Trends on the top left corner of your Pinterest account - under the Analytics tab.

Using Pinterest Trends

When you first open Pinterest Trends and scroll down, you will come across the top Pinterest Trends of the week, as well as trending topics by category. Each will include graphs so that you can view the level of interest in the topic over a period of time.

If you scroll to the bottom, you will also find the platform's annual Pinterest 100, which comes out at the beginning of the year and forecasts emerging trends for the year ahead. For example, the top Pinterest trends for 2020 were things like eco-friendly habits and conscious-consumption internationally inspired design, and ’90s throwback.

Incorporating Pinterest Trends into your Keyword Research

Now what I find particularly useful about Pinterest Trends, is the idea to use it for Pinterest keyword research going forward in my and my client’s content strategies. Why is that? Because Pinterest trends gives you direct insights into what consumers are searching for online, and what period of the year particular keywords tend to trend.

Knowing when particular Pinterest keyword search queries spike is particularly helpful if you’re planning a strategy or campaign a few months in advance. The typical user searches for seasonal trends on Pinterest long before they take action or turn to other platforms. Use this to your advantage to get ahead of online conversations.

For example, “digital planner” was one of the top trending searches in the week ending December, and then drops off mid-January. The graph then starts to rise again as it nears the end of the year again.

“Digital planner” is a pretty broad keyword, but you can use Pinterest Trends’ auto-fill option to find other popular digital planner keyword ideas, such as free digital planner, 2020 planner and digital bullet journal.

The Importance of Pinterest Keyword Research

If you find related keywords in your Pinterest keyword research, you can capitalize on that interest with blog posts, social media posts, videos, and in your other content marketing materials!

Like all good things, it takes time and effort to come up with original content marketing ideas and unique marketing campaigns, but tools like Pinterest Trends can take some of the guesswork out of understanding what your audience wants to see. If you would like to learn more about Pinterest metrics and understanding Pinterest analytics, check out my blog post on that topic here.
